Limmudim / Israel 101
The Holocaust in Israeli Awareness: 1948 - 2012
Sunday January 22
7:00pm – Calgary JCC
For decades, Shoah survivors suppressed their pasts. Since the Eichmann trial in 1961 - 1962, the silence has been broken, culminating in the recent, intensive travels of many young Israelis to Poland to explore this painful past. Calgary Jewish Community Council and the Israel Studies Program, Faculty of Arts, University of Calgary invites everyone to hear visiting scholar Dr. Gideon Greif who will explore the reasons for the change and the growing Israeli emphasis on commemoration and remembrance. Dr. Greif currently teaches Jewish and Israeli history at the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He has previously lectured at the Open University in Israel, the University of Miami and the University of Haifa. At Yad Vashem he has served for more than 30 years as editor, historian, educator, lecturer and senior researcher and head of the Polish desk. He has produced for film and radio and has written extensively about the Holocaust including the acclaimed book We Wept Without Tears – Testimonies of the Jewish Sonderkommandos in Auschwitz. His film documentary on the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz-Birkenau will be produced in France in 2012. Tickets are $10 (students free) at the door. For further information please contact Judy Shapiro at 403-444-3153.

Does your Chanukah celebration begin with that age old question… left to right or right to left? It’s easy to forget from year to year! Candles are added to the Chanukiah or Menorah from right to left. But they are always lit in the opposite direction, from left to right beginning with the newest candle. Chag Chanukah sameach!
