Maple Syrup Dumplings

In keeping with the Canada Day festivities, Lyne is happy to share this delectable delight: Maple Syrup Dumplings (Grands-Pères). A favourite recipe from her home province of Quebec, it is sure to please any sweet tooth! Très bien!

Yield: 12 dumplings

 

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (500 mL) unbleached all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) sugar
  • 2 teaspoon (10 mL) baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon (1 mL) salt
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (250 mL) milk
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 mL) vanilla extract
  • 1 can (540 mL/19 oz) maple syrup
  • 1 cup (250 mL) water

 

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  2. Work the butter into the dry ingredients with your fingers or a fork until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
  3. Add the milk and vanilla, stirring with a wooden spoon until the dough is smooth.
  4. In a large saucepan, pour the syrup and water and bring to a boil.
  5. With two spoons or a moistened ice cream scoop, shape the dough into about 12 balls; use about 30 mL (2 tbsp) for each ball.
  6. Drop the balls one by one into the boiling syrup mixture.
  7. Cover, reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes.
  8. Serve with the hot syrup and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
